Gastric Resection Q&A

  • What is gastric resection?

Gastric resection or gastrectomy is a type of gastrointestinal surgery where Dr. Lin removes part, most, or all of your stomach:
Partial gastric resectionDuring a partial gastric resection, Dr. Lin removes the lower section of your stomach. He also closes off the duodenum (the first section of your small intestine), where food goes when it leaves your stomach. Dr. Lin then connects your remaining stomach to the bowel beyond the duodenum. He might take the lymph nodes out as well if you have cancer.
Complete or total gastric resectionTotal gastric resection is where Dr. Lin removes the entire stomach. He then connects your esophagus, which is usually attached to the top of your stomach, to the small intestine, which is normally below your stomach.
Sleeve gastrectomySleeve gastrectomy involves the removal of around 75% of your stomach to leave a small, tubular pouch. Its most common use is as a form of bariatric surgery to help people struggling with obesity lose weight.
Removing most or even all of your stomach doesn't mean you can't digest your food anymore, but you have to make certain changes to your diet and eating habits after gastric resection.

  • Why would I need gastric resection?

Gastric resection might be necessary if you have a disease affecting your stomach for which there are no other suitable treatments. Some of the conditions that might require gastric resection include:
Stomach cancer● Benign (noncancerous) stomach tumors Perforations in your stomach wall Severe duodenal or peptic ulcers
Stomach cancer is one of the most widespread forms of cancer, and gastric resection forms a vital part of combatting the disease. However, benign tumors are also very common, and while they aren't such a risk to life, they can cause problems with your gastrointestinal system.

  • How is gastric resection performed?

Unless there are good reasons to perform open surgery, Dr. Lin typically uses minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques when carrying out gastric resection.
Open surgery might be necessary for some patients and in certain procedures, but for the most part, Dr. Lin can complete your gastric resection operation using the Da Vinci Xi® robotic surgery system:
Robotic surgery is the most advanced option and offers several advantages to patients. Unlike open surgery, where you have a large abdominal incision that affords the surgeon direct access to your stomach, robotic surgery uses small ports-incisions of under an inch-through which go laparoscopic instruments attached to a robotic arm.
Dr. Lin controls the robot and instruments with sophisticated computer software, viewing your stomach using images from a camera at the end of the laparoscope. Robotic surgery causes far less injury to your body, so you feel less pain and get better much more quickly after your operation.
